The Original Lockdown: 40 Days on a Boat
“Quarantine” comes from the Italian quaranta giorni, meaning 40 days. During the 14th-century plague, ships had to sit offshore for 40 days before docking. It was basically medieval curbside pickup, minus the WiFi. The policy stuck—and gave us a word we’d later come to know too well.
